Bahamas at the Casbah

We just got back from our road trip to Hamilton for the Bahamas show at the Casbah.

AMAZING!!!

Renting the zipcar and making the trek out of the city in rush hour traffic was so worth the effort!

We wouldn’t have gone to steel town if the show at The Mod Club hadn’t sold out but I think this was a better venue- more intimate. Of course we shouldered our way to the very front.

The Weather Station was the opening act. Interestingly this was the third time we had seen both acts- the first for each was Jason Collett’s Basement Revue back in December 2011.

This was the first time we had seen her with backing musicians Daniel Romano (guitar, drums), Felicity Williams (backup vocals) and Afie (aka Bahamas) for part of the set. This rounded out her sound and added an extra dimension to her dreamy stream-of-consciousness style of music. The only real annoyance were the chatty Cathy’s at the back of the bar who just would not shut up- what can you do? Can’t punch them…. And I could have done without the girl singing into my right ear.

Bahamas put on a fantastic show. So funny, cheeky and talented- not necessarily in that order. He is an incredible guitar player, very intense. A big part of the show is being able to see him perform. I highly recommend that you make sure you can see him do his thing on stage.

The very enthusiastic crowd intermittently yelled out requests- prompting Afie to tell us that he was in charge. I laughed. We made sure we got to the very front because a tall guy was breathing down our neck- waiting for the opportunity to step right in front of us. He was thwarted. At one point, with crowd encouragement, Afie got everyone in the bar to sing Never Again, with him and his band. It was an amazing moment- it made him feel like Elvis.

I could go on and on about the show but I need to get to sleep so I’ll leave you with one last thing.

This was one of the best shows so far this year- top three for sure.
