CMW- Day Four: Rococode

Recocode is yet another band we decided to check out based on a brief set at TIFEM.

Yes, the Institute was THE place to get a great (well curated) sampling of what was being offered at CMW this year?

Why them?

To be frank, I was intrigued by Laura Smith’s vocals. To truly understand you have to take a listen.

To my battered ears Smith sounds a bit like a cross between Briana Corrigan (with The Beautiful South) and the female vocalists from the movie Bugsy Malone.

I am drawn to unique voices- especially when the singers in a band work so well together- bringing about a sort of synergy greater than the sum of the individual parts.

I enjoyed the set at the Hard Luck but I preferred their earlier show. That may be due in large part to the sound issues they seemed to have. It was good to see that they could rock out but the vocals weren’t gelling seamlessly as they did that afternoon at TIFEM. But maybe that was just me because my friend preferred the evening show. We’ll probably fight about this later.

The real litmus test is whether we would see them again…. Yes, depending on the venue and what we were in the mood for. Of course this is purely a reflection of my personal taste and not meant to reflect upon the talents of the musicians.

They have only been together about a year and regularly play for other bands. I’d like to see how their music evolves but in the meantime, I’m going stop writing and give Weapon another listen.
