All Asians Look Alike

Okay, before everyone jumps down my throat, I am being slightly facetious.

This is something I joke about to my non-Asian friends. I kid that I could do something with impunity because any witnesses would not be able to pick me out of a crowd. They don’t believe me when I tell them that there is confusion when trying to identify characteristics of someone outside of one’s race, be it Asian, Caucasian, Martian.

Do you not watch Law and Order (in every connotation), CSI, Criminal Minds???

Our team was playing an away game at one of the tony tennis clubs in Toronto last night. We got creamed but they were lovely hosts. I was sitting on the patio, enjoying my chicken salad and one of the ladies comes up to me to say good-bye.

She enjoyed our match and was looking forward to coming to our modest little club next week.

I put my fork down and smiled- in confusion.

I did not play against this woman but I thanked her and said I we were looking forward to hosting next Monday. The slightly bemused expression on my face must have tipped her off because she realized then that I was not the person she thought I was.

She was embarrassed but I was not about to make her feel more uncomfortable. They really were nice people and not everyone in the league is.

The captain, also Asian, said she probably played against J, who was going in for seconds at the time.

The poor woman made a quick exit.

I looked at the captain and it was all I could do not to laugh- but we held it in because we did not want to be rude.

It was especially funny because it happened to me the previous week at a home match but this was also something our team had joked about. The majority of our team members are Asian this year. We are all short and have similar builds so we mused that it would be funny if we dressed alike to confuse our opponents.

I guess we don’t have to dress alike to confuse them- if only it helped us win a few more matches.
