Canada is Going to Be in for a World of Hurt

Last night’s election result was the worst thing that could have happened- unless, of course, you happen to be a healthy, rich, white, Christian Fundamentalist man.

Four years of Harper unfettered….

If you thought it was bad before, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

Everyone was giddy over the coming out party for the NDP, the history making assent to Official Opposition. Yeah that’s great- except with a Harper majority where no one has a say in anything except for Harper. How can anyone hold him and the Conservatives accountable in a majority situation when they couldn’t even do it in a minority situation?

People with half a brain are still reeling from this outcome. At one point I wondered if I would wake up this morning and it would all be just one horrifically realistic nightmare but it is not a joke and there is nothing we can do about it for the next four years.

The NDP and Elizabeth May (arguably the only glimmer of a silver lining) should bask in the glow- soak it up while you can- because the harsh reality of sitting in parliament with not even a diminished voice but no voice is going to set in really fast.

Some people are trying to make light of things- deluded in the fact that the government (whoever it is) will do what they do and the rest of us will just go on our merry way…. You just hold onto that fairy tale because things are going to come down hard and fast.

But what really is in jeopardy?

Women’s rights.

Minority rights.

Arts funding.

Healthcare.

Education.

The protection of Canadian assets, especially in the north.

I could go on but depression is setting in and all I really want to do right now is lie down.

As much as it pains me to say, we deserve what we are going to get because the voting public (even worse, the non-voting public) has presented this country to Harper on a silver platter.

God help us all.
