Post Mortem on My All-Inclusive Mayan Riviera Holiday

This was my first experience with an all-inclusive vacation (the Spring Break thing never appealed to me- does that make me a freak?) and as much as I enjoyed myself, I am not sure if I would do it again.

Unless (of course) another friend decides a destination wedding is the cat’s ass- I couldn’t not go and support him/her. What kind of a friend would I be?

Oh the sacrifices I will make for my friends.

In all seriousness, I totally get the appeal of not having to pull your wallet out constantly (unless you really wanted to do something extra) and just letting your whims guide you.

Beach? Pool? Hammock? All the above?

Buffet? Snacks (beach and pool side) at Captain Morgan’s Grill? Reservations at an a la carte? (Too much effort and hassle.)

Where was I?

Barcelo Maya Caribe. Beautiful resort but then I don’t have anything to compare it to.

On the bus from Cancun to our hotel, I actually lost count of the number of resorts we passed- total resort ghetto.

Everything was lush and green, maintained immaculately. You could close off your rooms but everything else was completely open- which made sense- let the breeze flow through to cool things off.

We actually had amazing weather, highs in the mid-20’s and cooler evenings which made it nice to sleep. I’m happiest in the mid-high teens but I’m not going to complain. The only day it rained was the day we flew in- and we were delayed so long in Toronto that we pretty much missed all of it by the time we arrived. Still not happy with Thomas Cook and the five+ hour delay but what can you do?

The wedding took place on the Thursday and it was absolutely beautiful. I started to get weepy as soon as the music started- I am such a sap. Everyone was in tears so I was in good company. The hilarious part were all the people in bathing suits, sitting on their loungers, watching (and taking pictures!!) of the proceeding like it was a sporting event. It could only have been funnier if they had buckets of popcorn with them.

I have to admit that I was getting pretty sick of the food by the end of the week- I was craving real Chinese food. Having said that, I definitely gained weight.

I could go on and on about everything that happened (how bad the bar rail was- the only thing I could drink were tequila shots) but I can feel people dropping off already so I’ll stop.
