Lotto Max Fever

Have you got it?

The big draw tonight is 50 million with an additional 45 one million dollar prizes.

That’s a lot of clams.

People in our office started to play three weeks ago when the jackpot got to 50 million, and some of us have been throwing in an additional $5 the last couple weeks to buy some more chances.

Do we honestly think we are going to win? It’s fun to think about but no one (as far as I know) have resignation papers drawn up. I am convinced the only reason people generally throw in is to hedge against the worst possible scenario- the group ticket actually wins and you are the only loser to hold onto your $5.

Realistically, the chance your number will come up is something like one in 25 million. In our heads we know we would be better off saving and investing that money but $5 is small price to pay to dream a little.

Who am I kidding? Dream A LOT!!!!

I’d be in the position to take care of my immediate family (trust funds for everyone!), cover higher education for my godchildren, and buy those amazing Fiorentini and Baker Boots I have been coveting for years.

I have grand plans to visit friends in far-flung places, eat in restaurants where the bill for six diners (excluding wine) would come to more than a mortgage payment, go to Comic-Con in San Diego.

My list is very long but I don’t want to bore you with the details. A lot of those things can be done now but I have been in a save-for-a-rainy-day mode for a while.

I have always been good with delaying gratification- not generally considered a virtue these days. If I have a big goal I can be very focused. I’ve had people mock because I wasn’t into the outward trappings of what they considered successful. They are no longer friends of mine but I am sure they are still paying off their mortgage while I have been mortgage-free about 13 years.

If I stopped to consider how much money I have spent over the years on lottery tickets when the jackpots got particularly big, I would probably be nauseous. But that license to dream, to take a header into total fantasy, I can live with having a slightly smaller bank account.

I know I am lucky just to have been born in Canada and I have been very lucky this week.

Free tickets to a concert, a Bullfrog gift basket through CP24- maybe I’ll be even luckier tonight. Sorry, I think I may have a slight temperature….
