Lying As a Sign of Intelligence
On the news this morning there was a report that lying is in young children is a sign of intelligence.
We laughed out loud.
Since lying requires complex thought, the ability to lie while keeping the truth in the back of their mind means one is a smartie.
Only 20% of two-year olds lie but by the age of 4, 90% of kids lie.
According to the director of the Institute of Child Study, (Department of Human Development and Applied Psychology, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education) University of Toronto, Dr. Kang Lee, “Those who have better cognitive development lie because they can cover up their tracks.” A friend is studying at OISE, I wonder is he knows of Dr. Lee or anything else about this study. I may have to check out his website to see what else he is researching…..
Lying is seen as an important developmental milestone.
The reporter stated parents should not be overly concerned about this behaviour because almost all kids lie and said that parents shouldn’t yell and smack their kids. This is what set us off.
I don’t know why we thought this was funny though it could have been the way he said it with a big smile on his face.
