Apparently I Have Been Living Under a Rock
A friend of mine forwarded a link to this band The Candle Thieves (who have been stuck in my head for days) and I had to ask her where she found them.
She has been listening to this Dutch internet radio station Zeilsteen that plays new and old alternative.
It’s amazing.
I used to listen to CFNY and Brave New Waves (when I wasn’t listening to college radio) back in the day but CFNY became so geriatric and commercial and Brave New Waves was killed so I have been out of the music scene for a bajillion years now.
There is comfort in knowing there are other people who like music that is not overproduced and more often than not actually sung by the people that wrote it- people who tend not to lip-synch when performing “live.”
But I keep getting sidetracked because I will hear something really good and I will have to look for them on MySpace or YouTube.
I feel like a complete dork because Heaven Can Wait by Charlotte Gainsbourg caught my attention. I thought it was interesting a band would take the name of a French actress/hipster/trendsetting all-around cool chick (with the kind of pedigree people would kill for) that anyone with style aspirations would seek to emulate. It turns out to be Charlotte Gainsbourg. Of course she can sing.
I’m going to throw up now.
But what blew me away was hearing something off the latest studio album by the Stereophonics, Innocent. I used to love these guys! I have Performance and Cocktails (1999) and Just Enough Education to Perform (2001) but it may be time to get something new.
I think listening to Zeilsteen is going to make me very poor.
