Crushing on The Candle Thieves

A friend of mine forwarded a link to a song I cannot get out of my head.

I have only listened to We’re All Gonna Die (Have Fun) by The Candle Thieves about 15 times so far this morning.

Make that 16 17.

The music is catchy, the video is adorable and who can resist a British accent?

If it sounds like I have a crush, maybe a wee one…. I have a weakness for nerd cuteness.

Their album, We’re All Gonna Die (Have Fun), was just released March 29th. I’m assuming we can’t get it in Canada just yet but I would encourage anyone who likes British pop music to check out the videos on YouTube.

They do a version of The Smith’s There Is A Light That Never Goes Out that speaks to my inner angsty teen self. This is apropos in so many ways since The Candle Thieves also infuse melancholic lyrics and slightly morose subject matter with light happy pop tunes.

But don’t expect a Smith’s retread. These guys (The Candle Thieves are Scott McEwan and ‘The Glock’) don’t have the moody guitar magic of Johnny Marr but they are infinitely more playful. There is a live version of WAGD(HF) where they end off with a one line homage to Journey.

Sigh…. Could it get any better?

I am going to make it my mission to learn how to play this song on the ukulele. Or maybe I’ll try The Sunshine Song….

They have (or will be) playing in New York and at the SXSW in Texas. I don’t see any gigs in Canada on their MySpace page but they just finished a garden tour last year, a tour of people’s living rooms and have been known to play gigs in ice cream parlours and on boats.

I wonder what it would take to get the boys to Canada to play my living room?

18 and counting…
