August 27th Can’t Come Soon Enough

I reiterated my end date to a couple people who have been the bane of my existence since my return to work last fall.

They work within this artificial construct, this (de)illusion of a large corporation where all they have to do is delegate a task and have the fruits of that request magically present itself on a silver platter.

Contrary to their belief, we do not sit on our butts waiting for a directive from them. There is very little understanding of what we do and no attempt on their part to scratch the surface of their baseless assumptions.

Our departments should absolutely be working more closely together but their definition of cooperation is a little one-sided.

They assume that they can say “Jump” and we will respond with “How high?”

Despite repeated attempts to teach them how to navigate our files and my request to field all queries through my supervisor (which is how things should be done) they keep coming back at us with the same questions but not the awareness that they are asking us the same questions.

Over and over again.

It shouldn’t surprise me so why does it piss me off so much?

Before, my ire stemmed mainly from the fact that they were lazy sods who whine to get their way.

Now, I am trying to deal with the question of succession because I know how much work will be dumped on the laps of the people I work with who will be left behind. It is not going to be pretty.

Things do not magically wrap themselves with the final delivery to the broadcaster. We are constantly asked whether we have received the final rulings regarding certification before a show has even wrapped. That says everything.

In the end, all I can do is all I can do. I’ll try to make things as assessable as possible and fold in those who will likely have to deal with my work when I leave but all the extra hours I have worked in the past (without compensation) stopped March 12th when I received my end date.

I am available for those hours I am paid, no more, no less and if people choose to waste my time, that is something they will pay for later- not me.
