Getting Giddy Over Winterlicious 2010

I shouldn’t get my hopes up because I have been disappointed by all the restaurants I have tried during Winter- or Summer- licious…except for one- the one I hope to bring my mother to this year.

But I don’t care. I love food and I am getting excited because I have booked three restaurants- so far.

I am cheating because I have been to two of the restaurants before and the third is an inexpensive lunch so even if it sucks, I won’t feel like it has been a waste of time and money.

I booked a lunch at Bodega because a few of us have plans to see the King Tut exhibit at the AGO. I would have been fine with the pub across the street but the desire for girly or artsy won out. That was fine with me- as long as it wasn’t Matahari. (I spit on them).

To be perfectly honest, I am not particularly inspired by their menu (though they do get bonus points for having four entrée options for lunch) but considering my past experiences there, I will not be disappointed. (Cassoulet with Duck Confit, here I come!) I haven’t been to Bodega in about five years but the food is good, the staff is nice and the place is not pretentious.

Check, check and check.

The other “cheat” is Pangaea. I was there when it first opened- in 1996!!!! And I haven’t been back since. It was SO good. I remember the place having a real New York City vibe about it and I still dream about the tuna tartar appetizer. Their prix menu for supper is pretty good (no beef bourguignon or Caesar salad to be found) and the maître d’s deep French accent was to die for. I am (a little bit) tempted to call up again just to hear him talk but I won’t.

This actually works out perfectly because we have been talking about celebrating our respective birthdays (which came around in August and September!) at a nice restaurant and shopping at the store that we should probably just sign over our lives to (Anthropologie). I have thought about going back to Pangaea since that first visit- I hope my expectations won’t be setting me up for monstrous disappointment. I guess I’ll know in a few weeks.

The only thing I have to do now is cross my fingers and hope I can get a reservation for Senses….
