Week 5: Toronto Garbage Strike, Not the CNE Too!!!

How long will this go on???

Even the CNE has been targeted as a potential temporary dump site!

With The Ex opening up August 21, that is a fantastic idea!

Will the strike still be going strong in a month’s time- it is anyone’s guess right now.

Someone even set fire to a dump site in Scarborough the other night. That is crazy. It probably smelled bad enough without this bonus fry.

There are a series of protests to take back the parks scheduled for today. Will that have any effect on negotiations? I really don’t know. The summer is almost half over and the people who rely on municipal daycare and summer programming for their kids are basically left hanging in the wind. Essentially those in lower income brackets are the ones left with the short end of the proverbial stick.

With the parks rapidly filling up with garbage, where will the kids go?

I played tennis on courts in Moss Park about 30 metres away from the dump site. I didn’t get any closer than I had to but I didn’t smell anything. It smells worse around the trash bins where people have decided it is okay to dump their litter since other people obviously have. I find it very interesting that people have taken it upon themselves to tie garbage bags to these overflowing trash bins to encourage passers-by to deposit garbage in the bags as opposed to heaping it beside the bins. It is not a solution but as a stop-gap measure, it is better than the alternative.

Apparently there is a “movement” (I hesitate to use that term) initiated by the Deputy Premier of Ontario to organize concerned citizens to come together and clean up targeted neighbourhoods. They have their supporters and their detractors. Though I personally think there is a lot that is good about this effort, it is a political manoeuver and I found it very interesting to see John Tory featured prominently in the clip…. Hmmm, someone isn’t positioning themselves to run for mayor, no, not at all.

If you see my sentiment as cynical- duh. I am the first to admit it.

If politicians (or aspiring politicians) do something and the media doesn’t report it, did it really happen?

Just wondering….
