Week 3: Toronto Garbage Strike… Updated

Well, the contentious dump site at Christie Pits has reached capacity and as of Sunday evening, is closed. That means two of the original 19 temporary dump sites are no longer taking garbage. The York Mills Arena dump site closed on Friday.

But never fear, two additional sites have opened (near Centennial Arena Community and Wilket Creek in Sunnybrook park) to replace them.

Not exactly convenient for me but I don’t have a lot to throw out- yet.

On the news this morning they mentioned a drop off site for organics. It won’t take all the items that can be thrown into the green bin but they will take anything that could be composted in your backyard. Vegetable and fruit trimmings, egg shells, coffee grinds, tea bags etc.

It’s about time! At least some of it will now be diverted from the regular garbage. The (one!) location is Davenport and Bathurst. I imagine that it is on the Southwest corner. I haven’t found a specific address but I will post it as soon as I find it. I stand corrected. It is located at Scadding Court Community Centre at Bathurst and Dundas.

They ask that people bring it in containers that can be rinsed off and reused. Good stainless steel buckets can be found at Lee Valley that are perfect for this purpose. There is a basic version (two sizes) and a fancier one with a charcoal filter.

I hope this is an opportunity that people will avail themselves of. Starting your own compost bin or setting up a vermicomposter would be better- and more convenient- but baby steps.

It doesn’t look like there is a rush on the provincial level to put an end to this strike and who knows what is happening at the bargaining table between the union and city councilors. I hope for the best but expect the worst.

Will this go on as long as it has in Windsor? That would suck but we just don’t know at this point. It would be great if people would consider how they could reduce the amount of garbage thrown out but the speed at which two of the first 19 dump sites filled up makes me think that is not happening.

We’ll see how things change (or not) as this thing drags on…
