Week 2: Toronto Garbage Strike

We are just into week two but why does it feel like this has been going on longer?

The last time the inside and outside workers went on strike, the provincial government stepped in and put a quick end to it because the Pope was coming to town and it wouldn’t do to have Toronto looking like a garbage dump.

Well, this time, there isn’t a Papal visit scheduled any time soon and the provincial government in place is a bit more labour friendly.

What does that mean?

We may just have to hunker down and make arrangements for a protracted strike.

We’re adults- we can deal, can’t we?

My boyfriend and I were walking around the parade route at Yonge and Gerrard yesterday when we saw a girl put her empty cup on the ground beside a garbage/recycling bin. She wasn’t the first person to do it and she won’t be the last but I was annoyed.

More than annoyed actually. If I had more balls I would have thanked her for littering. Because, that is exactly what she was doing.

Just because other people are doing it, doesn’t make it okay. She (and I am sure, the other people who also threw their garbage on the ground) knew better and did it anyway. This crap is not going to magically disappear. It will get picked up by the wind and get strewn around the city. With the additional temporary dump sites, there is no excuse for not taking it home and disposing of it there.

That is the kind of attitude that has to change if we are going to get through this like civilized people.

On a positive note, I haven’t had garbage dumped on my property- yet.

But it is still early and I am a bit of a fatalist so it is only a matter of time.
