Day 5: Toronto Garbage Strike…19 More Dump Sites Added

The locations of 19 additional (temporary) dump sites were announced yesterday– this should make it easier for people who don’t have the means (time or patience) with which to get to one of the waste transfer stations.

The union’s take is that the city is digging in its heels for a long drawn out negotiation.

It sounds to me like both sides have dug in their heels and the rest of us have to deal with the consequences.

Neither side is winning the war for popular support. The political fallout for Miller is a sharp decline in approval ratings. Some polls even have potential mayoral candidates ranked higher. What- John Tory was unable to become the Premier of Ontario so now he is switching his focus, again? I didn’t know there was an election in the offing….

There is a dump site fairly close to me- close enough to walk over but not close enough to have to deal with any odour or rodent issues. I believe this was also a location during the previous strike but it didn’t last long enough for me to use it. I hope I can say the same this time.

This site, as are all the others, is just for garbage. Recycling, green bin, yard waste, toxic substances will have to wait out the duration of the strike- unless, of course, it reaches Windsor proportions. One would hope that this eliminates the excuses people seem to have found for littering but I am not holding my breath.

It is a little astonishing how much garbage is already floating around the streets- and it is only Day 5. It must be really, really difficult to carry that aluminum pop can home to one’s own recycling bin.

I wonder what Church will look like after Pride this weekend! I am sure Pride organizers have several contingency plans but there are going to be a lot of people funneling in for the parades and the parties. I hope the Pride events go smoothly so other events in the city can be modeled on the same. At this point who knows how long the civil service strike will last and it would be a shame to cancel all the events in the city.

Regardless, I am keeping my fingers crossed that cooler heads will eventually prevail.
