Bus to Nowhere
I had an appointment mid-morning in a far off location that was accessible via Toronto Transit without an additional fare but it felt like I was heading into God’s country.
Not too long ago it actually was God’s country but there has been and continues to be so much development, I barely recognize the areas that I see on a semi-regular basis.
Though the bus driver was nice, his herky-jerky driving made me slightly nauseous. This only served to enhance the experience.
There is a reason I live downtown- to avoid this kind of commute. The bus was pretty packed, coming and going. Is this a daily ritual for these people? And it was running smoothly- imagine early February and the bus is late. Unless it was for a job that I absolutely loved, I couldn’t do it. Not every day. It would be such a grind. For me it would be a waste of time because I can’t read while in motion. But I am very lucky, I have a lot of choice.
I like being able to walk around and I don’t get a sense of neighbourhood up around the Yonge and Steeles area. I could be wrong.
I love the anonymity of being in a big city but I also love exploring and being connected to the different neighbourhoods scattered around the city. I grew up in a small town but given the choice, I want to be in the heart of the city or the country. No middle ground for me.
I remember being told (!) that I will change my mind when I have kids. I will want the backyard, a big house, a car etc. Well, I have a backyard and a decent sized place but even if I didn’t, I think there are a lot of green options out there for people raising kids in the city and when did it become a crime to have your kids share a bedroom.?
Is there a chance I might change my mind? Of course there is but it is a very slim one.
Very slim.
