She’s Got Chops

They laughed at her when she walked on stage.

People in the audience were giving each other knowing looks, skeptical looks. The judges were a little more subtle in their cynicism but not by much.

Everyone was thinking the same thing and had written her off.

This 47 year old who lives in Scotland with her cat was not much to look at but she can sing!

I am sure you have seen clips of this on the news and certainly YouTube but just in case you haven’t, you can find a clip of Susan Boyle’s performance on Britain’s Got Talent here.

When she opened her mouth, I was stunned. Her voice is beautiful. She sang I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables.

I get weepy when I hear this song. I am generally not a musicals person (I prefer plays) but Les Miserables made me cry.

Part of the reason I get emotional every time I see a clip of this is because she is such an underdog. She is an unemployed church volunteer who has never been kissed. (And you know she is not a Drew Barrymore in disguise.) You want her to do well. Yes, you know that you were manipulated somewhat by the prelude to her performance but you still want her to be great- and she is. The bookies have tapped her as the favourite to win the competition.

This reminds me of the first winner of this competition, Paul Potts (regrettable name!) who was also incredibly unassuming- and then he opened his mouth.

Same reaction.

Where are these people hiding? You want to think that such talent would rise to the top but it takes a reality show with Simon Cowell as a judge to discover them?

We all know that the beautiful tend to have it easier and that is not just me being bitter- I have read about studies of assumptions based simply on appearance. They are not shocking but very disappointing. Looks won’t get you everywhere but it will open doors. I wonder if they will make her over…. I just hope talent wins out and that her dreams come true.

(Forgive the cheese, still emotional.)
