Why Am I Here Today?

It was a gorgeous sunny -1°C this morning. I (almost) always cut through this parking lot on the way to work and it was half empty.

Why wasn’t I smarter and booked today off?

Going home is always fun (and not good for the waistline) but it is never restful. It’s not like the drive is long and I have even less to worry about since I am just a passenger but the prep before we go home and the prep before we go back to Toronto can be extensive and fraught with family tension requiring delicate negotiation.

That sounded a little sinister…

Our parents are very concerned for us- to them we will be eternally 10 years old. Every time we visit, they try to send us back with a carload of food and sundry items- to the point where things are practically wedged in around us.

They get very upset if we don’t pack the car to bursting but we only have so much room in our respective domiciles. They worry about us and want to do as much as they can to make our lives easier so it is a fine line between accepting their care packages and putting our foot down. Dad has (half) joked that my brother should take his mini-van but we all know that we would end up taking a mini-van of stuff back with us and not just a carload.

So today, given the fantastic (if slightly chilly) weather, would have been a great day to stay home and relax. Perhaps even do something creative to recharge the batteries. It also would have been a chance to get some of those “weekend things” done that I did not have time for. There are never enough hours in the day and I don’t even have kids yet!

It is a good thing I don’t have easy access to window- I would be daydreaming the day away. My head is so not in the game today- thankfully I have enough brainless administrative housekeeping to keep me occupied until day’s end.

I hope everyone who was smart enough to take the extra day is enjoying it to the fullest. If nothing else, I can relish the decadence vicariously and hopefully remember my lesson when the next long weekend rolls around.
