Newfound Respect for Jian Ghomeshi

I have never been a fan of Jian Ghomeshi.

I never really liked the music he did back in the 90’s.

I have seen him at different shows in Toronto and he always struck me as a dorky wanna-be.

Well, my opinion of him has changed somewhat after hearing him interview the Boxmasters.

Who the hell are the Boxmasters?

Well, you may know the lead singer/songwriter/drummer, Billy Bob Thornton.

Yes, that Billy Bob Thornton.

They opened for Willie Nelson and Ray Price at Massey Hall tonight and are back for a repeat performance tomorrow.

Check out the painful interview.

To say that BBT was being an ass is an understatement. For most of the interview he was about as responsive as Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman a few weeks ago.

Hmmm…. Another well respected actor on a music bender.

Funniest moment(s)? When BBT compares himself to Tom Petty- twice! (At least- I was on the floor when he conjured Tom Petty the second time and may have missed subsequent references.)

Musicians tend to have a better time making the transition to acting than the other way around but you can’t blame them for trying. Who wouldn’t love to experience the life of a rock star? I have a not so secret fantasy to be a bass chick back-up singer….

Sorry, Wayne’s World dream sequence moment.

He must understand that people likely would not give the band the time of day if it wasn’t for his success as an actor/writer/director. It is not fair but that is the way it is.

He is leveraging his celebrity (notoriety?) for a second career. A lot of celebrities do it and who wouldn’t if they were in a similar position?

But why be such a self-righteous ignominious bastard?

Ghomeshi showed incredible restraint even as he called BBT out on his refusal to answer any questions with little more than, “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” or the even more obtuse, “I don’t know what you mean.” BBT seemed ready to pick a fight but Ghomeshi managed to subvert his desire to shake his head and bring it back to the music.

I am sure this is not the first time he has had to deal with a prima donna and I am sure it won’t be the last. Kudos to him for the respect he showed in dealing with a difficult situation but I would love to know what he really thinks…
