Oscar Preamble

I always watch the Oscars.

I might complain about the extendo broadcast and the cheesy musical numbers but I ALWAYS watch. Yes, I’m a sucker that way. I will yell at the t.v. if the nominees I want to win don’t (Broke Back Mountain losing to Crash, a travesty of justice if there ever was).

My poor boyfriend cries a little inside- making him sit through the pre-Oscar blah, blah, blah in addition to the broadcast itself might have something to do with it.

Okay, is it my t.v. or does Ben Mulroney’s skin colour look more off than usual?

Sorry, I digress.

I have entered a couple Oscar contests for mondo prizes so I’ll be following the results a little more closely. The odds of winning are low but I came in second a couple years ago and you just never know. A trip to Cannes or a Stella McCartney bag would be amazing…

There are so many tight races this year but I have my favourites. I have been watching too many pre-Oscar shows and it just kills me when they talk about who should win among the nominees (never mind those who are left out) and who will likely win.

People keep mentioning how you can’t discount the notorious campaigning by Harvey Weinstein and how it can sway the Academy voters. It just makes me sick to my stomach. He was instrumental in orchestrating Gwyneth Paltrow’s win for her role in Shakespeare in Love over Cate Blanchett’s star making performance in Elizabeth (and GP wonders why people hated her so much…an undeserved Oscar and her snotty rich-b!tch holier than thou attitude has nothing to do with it).

I need to keep telling myself that this is little more than a popularity contest. I should not get so emotionally involved but I will.

While I wait for Hugh Jackman to kick off the 81st Academy Awards, I will amuse myself by unleashing my inner fashionista and skewer the tragic ensembles that are coming down the red carpet.
