20-Something Pothead, News at 11

A 20-something smoking up wouldn’t be news unless you are one of the most decorated Olympians in history.

Oh Michael, what were you thinking?

The photo was taken last fall and the fallout could be huge for Phelps. I don’t buy into the thought that pot is as bad as heroin or coke- could you imagine the outrage if he were caught with a needle in his arm instead of a bong? It may be a gateway drug for some but there are plenty of legal drugs that are way more devastating than marijuana.

The problem is that he is (was?) considered a shining example of what can be achieved when you take natural talent and hours and years of training.

He may be a role model but why do we expect him to be a saint.

Who could blame him for cutting loose a little after the summer he has had?

Okay, Disney. (No more parades for him.)

I am sure potential endorsements are in jeopardy- to what extent, nobody knows yet. So far the IOC, and a couple sponsors continue to support him- I guess they don’t have morality clauses. You would think he would have been a little more discrete but great talent and achievement does not beget wisdom. His quick apology for “inappropriate behavior”  is his attempt to mitigate the damage of his royal f@ck up. Maybe he should give Kate Moss a ring for some tips.

There is no doubt that the media loves to build up its heroes, tear them down and build them up again. Who doesn’t love a comeback story? Let’s not forget that we are the ones who feed into this roller coaster.

I am sure he is no angel and for some, the real crime was getting caught in public. Other than the fact that his record breaking achievement was monumental, I don’t really care what he does or doesn’t do. As a public figure, he has to be aware of how his behaviour may or may not influence others (especially kids) but I find the reaction to this much more interesting.

Maybe this story will die a quick death- unless the amount of money he loses from this incident becomes public. Or if they manage to have him charged with possession. It could just be a lot of hot air, or not.

Other than being a boon for the late night talk shows, my guess is that the only person who has made off like a bandit over this “scandal” is the person who sold the shot to the tabloids.

Three cheers for enterprise, initiative and camera phones.

  1. next thing you know, Phelps will be trading in his medals to score something even more hardcore than weed — like a pack of Marlboros!

  2. You never know…I personally think Phelps bears a striking resemblance to Joe the Camel- but that’s just me.
